Overview

Kitchens: designed, built and signed off by one accountable team.

What it is

We supply and fit new kitchens from trusted suppliers (Howdens, Wren and others), or we work labour-only on kitchens you've already ordered. Full scope includes: strip-out of existing, first-fix plumbing and electrical adjustments, floor preparation, unit assembly and fitting, worktop template and install (laminate, quartz or granite via trade partners), splashback, appliance integration, plumbing final connections, tiling coordination, and pre-decoration snag.

Who it's for

Homeowners replacing tired kitchens, homeowners as part of an extension or full renovation, landlords upgrading rental properties, and clients who've already bought a kitchen from Howdens, Wren, IKEA, Magnet or an independent supplier and need a competent carpenter to fit it properly.

When it's needed

New builds and extensions have the kitchen fitted after plastering is fully dry and second-fix electrical is complete. Standalone kitchen replacements typically run once you've chosen the layout and confirmed delivery dates with the supplier.

Why professional matters

Kitchens live or die on the fitting. The units are the same units. What separates a kitchen that looks beautiful for 15 years from one that looks tired in 18 months is the carpenter, how doors are aligned, how scribes are cut, how worktops are levelled, whether wall units are fixed to structural noggins or just to plasterboard.

The cost of getting it wrong

A £12,000 kitchen fitted badly costs the same as one fitted well, and looks half the money.

Every risk below is something we've seen and put right. Every mistake below is something a competent, accountable team removes from your project entirely.

Risks of ignoring it

  • Doors and drawers that don't line, visibly uneven gaps on every run, the first thing every visitor notices for the life of the kitchen.
  • Wall units fixed into plasterboard rather than structural noggins, they hold until the day someone leans on an open door, then they don't.
  • Worktop joins visible, poorly biscuit-jointed and unsealed, water gets in, the substrate swells, the whole run gets replaced years earlier than it should.
  • Appliances installed to the wrong tolerances, integrated dishwashers that bang the cabinet, fridges that don't ventilate, ovens that overhang worktops and burn the front.

Common mistakes we see

  • Letting a general builder 'have a go' at the kitchen rather than booking a dedicated kitchen fitter.
  • Not agreeing before start what happens if the supplier misses a delivery date, reputable fitters have a written policy and hold the diary; unreliable ones just disappear.
  • Skipping worktop templating and cutting off the box, a £3,000 worktop cut wrong is worth a lot less than an extra couple of days waiting for a proper template.
Our Process

A clear, step-by-step system: from first call to final sign-off.

  1. 1
    Step 1

    Design & survey

We visit site, measure the space, confirm the plan (usually with the Howdens or Wren designer), and flag any structural or services issues before ordering.

  2. 2
    Step 2

    Fixed-price written quote

Line-by-line quote for strip-out, first-fix adjustments, fit, worktop, tiling coordination and snag, with a firm start date.

  3. 3
    Step 3

    Strip-out & first-fix adjustments

Existing kitchen removed carefully, first-fix plumbing and electrical adjustments made, floor levelled and structural noggins added where wall units need them.

  4. 4
    Step 4

    Unit fit, worktop & appliances

Base and wall units assembled, levelled and fixed; worktops templated and installed; appliances integrated to manufacturer tolerances; splashback fitted.

  5. 5
    Step 5

    Snag & handover

Doors and drawers walked and aligned, cabinets sealed to walls, worktops sealed at joins and around sinks, and a written care sheet handed over.

Why it matters

Specific, measurable benefits; not vague promises.

Doors that line for the life of the kitchen

Every door and drawer aligned to a consistent gap. Adjustments made once, properly; not left to 'settle in'.

Structurally fixed wall units

Wall units fixed to noggins added at first fix, not into plasterboard. They hold whatever gets loaded into them.

Watertight worktops

Worktops templated, biscuit-jointed properly, sealed at every join and around every sink cutout. The substrate stays dry for the life of the kitchen.

Appliances installed to spec

Every appliance fitted to the manufacturer's tolerances, ventilation gaps, plumb, level and squarely aligned within the run.

One accountable team

Carpenters, plumbers and electricians coordinated by one carpenter, nobody blaming the last trade for issues at handover.

In depth

The detail behind kitchens.

Materials, methods, variations and how the service applies to your specific project.

Supply-and-fit vs. labour-only

On supply-and-fit we quote the full kitchen, units, worktops, appliances, sink and tap, install, first-fix adjustments and snag, as a single fixed price. This is usually the simplest route for homeowners and captures the trade-account price on units. On labour-only we fit kitchens you've already ordered (from Howdens, Wren, IKEA, Magnet, or an independent). We check the schedule against site before delivery day, flag any discrepancies, and quote a firm labour price.

Materials, worktops & tiling

Units are typically 18mm carcass with soft-close hinges and drawers as standard on our recommended ranges. Worktops we fit include laminate (Howdens, Egger), solid wood (oak, walnut), quartz (Silestone, Caesarstone, Compac) and granite. Quartz and granite are templated after unit fit and installed by our stone partners with a warranty. Splashbacks include tile, glass, quartz upstands and stainless steel. Tiling is coordinated with our regular tiler on the same programme.

Plumbing, electrical & extraction

First-fix plumbing typically includes moving hot, cold and waste to new positions, plus new isolation valves at every appliance. Electrical typically includes new spurs for dishwasher, washing machine, oven and hob (as required), plus additional double sockets on the run. Cooker extraction is designed to duct externally through the soffit or wall; never re-circulated where an external run is achievable. All electrical and plumbing work is signed off by our qualified partners.

Residential vs. rental-property kitchens

For owner-occupied homes we typically spec mid- to upper-range Howdens and Wren cabinets with soft-close, real-wood or quartz worktops, and integrated appliances. For rental properties we spec durable mid-range cabinets, laminate worktops, and freestanding appliances that can be easily swapped between tenancies. In both cases the carpentry standard is the same, the difference is materials, not fit quality.

FAQs

Straight answers on cost, timeline, guarantees and process.

How much does a kitchen cost in Newport?

+

A mid-range Howdens or Wren supply-and-fit kitchen typically falls between £8,000 and £22,000 depending on unit range, worktop and appliances. Labour-only fitting on an already-supplied kitchen typically runs £2,500–£5,500 for a standard L-shape or U-shape. Every quote is a fixed price in writing after a survey.

How long does it take to fit a kitchen?

+

A standard kitchen swap (like-for-like layout) typically takes 5–10 working days including worktop template and install. Kitchens with wall removals, new plumbing runs or full re-plaster typically take 10–20 working days. Worktop template usually adds 5–7 days between fit-out and worktop install.

Can you work with Howdens, Wren, IKEA or my own supplier?

+

Yes. We fit regularly from Howdens and Wren and are familiar with their assembly and adjustment. We also fit IKEA, Magnet and independent-supplier kitchens on a labour-only basis. On any labour-only fit we check the schedule against site before delivery day and flag any discrepancies to you and the supplier.

Do you handle the plumbing and electrical work?

+

Yes, we coordinate qualified plumbers and electricians on the same programme so first-fix adjustments, appliance connections and extraction runs are all covered. Their certificates are handed over in your completion pack.

What happens if my worktop cutout is wrong?

+

We template every worktop after the units are fitted and levelled; never off the drawing. If there's ever a template-to-install issue with our stone partners, we absorb the correction on our side rather than passing it to you.

What guarantee do I get on the kitchen fit?

+

The units, worktops and appliances carry the manufacturer's warranty. Our fitting is guaranteed, the specific term is set out in the terms & conditions you sign before we start. All warranties are handed over in your completion pack.

Are you fully insured?

+

Yes. MG Timber Construction Ltd carries £15,000,000 of public liability insurance covering the business and every carpenter on site, plus employers' liability. Certificates are shared with your quote on request.

How quickly can you survey the job?

+

We aim to be on site within one week of your first enquiry. After the survey you receive a written fixed-price quote; no hourly rates, no surprises, no pressure to sign on the spot.

What deposit do you take and how are payments structured?

+

A 15% deposit is taken on booking to secure your slot in the diary. The balance is paid in staged payments tied to milestones on the works, agreed in writing before we start.

Do you cover emergency or urgent works?

+

For existing clients and structural safety issues we prioritise urgent call-outs and can usually be on site the same week. Emergency propping and make-safe works are quoted directly with the client before we begin.
